Chiropractic Manipulation Under Anesthesia at
Newark Pain and Rehab

Chiropractic manipulation under anesthesia is a necessary part of achieving wellness for our clients in Newark and the surrounding area.  Back pain, shoulder pain, as well as extremity pain, such as arm and leg pain can be so severe that it does not respond to more conservative chiropractic approaches such as spinal decompression.

Chiropractor, Dr. Vincent Saraceno, is a specialist in this form of therapy.  Our clients in Newark, East Orange, Ironbound and Irvington are considered to be candidates for manipulation under anesthesia if the only other option is surgery.

Newark Chiropractor Uses Manipulation Under Anesthesia

anesthesia_manipulation.jpgThis process was formerly strictly in the domain of osteopathic practitioners.  This form of physical therapy became less of an emphasis in that practice, though its value has never diminished.  In fact, it has proven a consistent 80-90% success rate in alleviating back pain, leg and arm pain, and other forms of chronic pain.  The practice has therefore been transferred from the osteopath to the chiropractor.  Despite its staggering success rate, manipulation under anesthesia is considered only for extreme cases, such as back pain that does not respond to normal spinal decompression techniques or as a corrective to failed surgery.

This technique is accomplished while the client is in a conscious state of sedation.  This prevents muscle spasms and muscle contractions as a pain reaction.  The client is then taken through passive range of motion movements in the lumbar and cervical/thoracic regions of the spine.  Once the normal barrier of resistance is achieved, specific chiropractic treatments are performed, followed by further physical therapy, which further promotes flexibility.

Once this is completed, the anesthesia is allowed to wear off while the client is monitored, and the client then begins the post-MUA therapy session.  This involves more passive range of motion exercising, inferential stimulation and cryotherapy.  The client is then sent home for rest.  The post-MUA therapy session is an essential part of the process.  It has to be done in the same day as a manipulation under anesthesia procedure in order to concretize the effects of the work done in the MUA.  Back pain, shoulder pain and pain in the extremities is more often than not sufficiently alleviated by the MUA to make this possible.

Not all conditions are resolved with one MUA session.  Some chiropractic problems can be severe enough to justify 2 or 3 visits.  However, it rarely occurs that 4 or more visits are necessary.  Unfortunately, this is not a situation that can be determined from the outset.  No matter how skilled a chiropractor is, there is no scientifically accurate way to predict how many MUA sessions will be needed.
